The Side Hustle Show aims to inspire and energize you, but this episode takes a different approach — and that's intentional. Nothing Much Happens is specifically designed to provide dull bedtime stories for adults, and it has garnered hundreds of millions of downloads.

Falling asleep is a common challenge, and Kathryn Nicolai (@nothingmuchhappens) has discovered a way to tackle it. Before becoming a content creator, Kathryn managed a yoga studio for over twenty years. She never envisioned building a media company; her goal was simply to help people sleep, as she had done for herself throughout her life. After six years and 400 episodes, she has since published two books, reached audiences in 35 countries, and transformed her work into a complete media company while still penning every word herself.

Listen to Episode 745 of the Side Hustle Show to discover: how a free podcast can create various income streams; why a premium membership with nearly zero churn is the most stable source of revenue; the art of storytelling that makes a sleep podcast effective and why AI can't mimic it.

From Yoga Studio to Sleep Podcast

Kathryn was a full-time yoga instructor and studio owner who discussed health with individuals daily, with sleep being a frequent topic. She believed she had the answer — having used stories to lull herself to sleep her whole life. The challenge was translating that into a format others could access.

A traditional publishing deal seemed unattainable without industry contacts, and self-publishing was not appealing. Then, one night, inspiration struck. She purchased a microphone and launched her podcast about six weeks later. The format of the show — a soothing introduction followed by a gentle, sensory-rich bedtime story set in “the Village of Nothing Much” — has remained unchanged since the inaugural episode.

      Growing Without Spending on Marketing

Kathryn did not engage in advertising. She informed people at her yoga studio and mentioned the podcast on Facebook; that was essentially her marketing strategy. The show's growth stemmed from the common struggle with sleep. If something aids your ability to sleep, you tend to share it with friends. Downloads increased from 150 to 200 daily, then surged to 1,400, then 3,000. Apple featured the show on New & Noteworthy, which significantly boosted its visibility.

Occasionally, celebrities would mention the podcast, causing spikes in interest. At one moment, she received a sudden influx of 600 comments from listeners in Brazil. She did not spend any money on marketing until around a year prior to recording this episode. In roughly a year after its launch, downloads surpassed 10 million.

How 10 Million Downloads Led to a Book Deal

Kathryn had always aspired to secure a traditional book deal. Once her podcast reached 10 million downloads, she reached out to her network to inquire about publishing connections. She was linked with a literary agency, and they collaborated on a proposal. Her agent advised her to stop overthinking it and prepare for a phone call within a month.

The call came 24 hours later, with publishers from around the globe expressing interest. The book "Nothing Much Happens" featured: 12 original exclusive stories specifically written for this publication, recipes, meditations, and full illustrations, with distribution across 35 countries. This was the moment Kathryn recognized that this was to be her career.

How Nothing Much Happens Generates Revenue

      Podcast Advertising — Pre-Roll Only

Kathryn began monetizing her show through podcast advertisements in 2020, adhering to a strict policy: pre-roll ads only. No mid-roll interruptions once listeners begin to relax. She maintained this principle even when networks pushed back. She worked with Stitcher and iHeart at times, but their limited inventory made it difficult for larger networks to prioritize her show.

Around two years ago, she transitioned to a smaller boutique network that proved to be a much better match — advertisers who comprehend the format see significant results, partly because her listeners are genuinely engaged in a way that many podcast audiences are not.

      Premium Membership

Kathryn launched a membership program around 2021–2022 at $40
