      What is Burnout?

Burnout is more than just feeling exhausted after a long day. It is a state of emotional, mental, and physical fatigue resulting from prolonged stress.

      Key symptoms include:

      Feeling emotionally depleted,

      Detachment from your job,

A sense of diminished personal achievement,

Underlying feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.

What distinguishes burnout from standard fatigue is a feeling of being trapped with no light at the end of the tunnel. You’ve been navigating a tough situation for an extended time, but there’s still no relief in sight. The concept of “burnout” was first introduced by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s. Although the diagnosis is relatively recent, the sensation is not new.

      Prevention: 4 Vital Strategies

      1. Discover Your Why

“Do what you love but call it work.”

Most people express a desire for a side hustle to earn extra income, but that extra income is merely a tool. What is the motivation behind wanting that additional income? What will it enable you to do? Delve five levels deep to identify your genuine motivations. A few notable guests have suggested the perfect average day exercise: envision your ideal average Tuesday in five years. This idea comes from Jaime Masters (episode 345), who initially thought envisioning was “super woo-woo” until she encountered it repeatedly during millionaire interviews. The wonderful part is that you’ll identify minor adjustments you can implement right now to start living your vision today. As Nietzsche stated, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”

      2. Establish a Nightly Shutdown Routine

I utilize my 3 Question Journal for this nighttime ritual:

      What did I achieve today?

      What am I thankful for?

What are my top priorities for tomorrow?

This practice allows you to recognize that tomorrow is another opportunity, assess the progress made, and outline a concise plan to succeed the next day. It’s essential for preventing burnout, and it’s a practice I genuinely recommend.

      3. Create Sustainable Systems

The key term here is sustainable. Tyler Christensen (episode 656) observed many Amazon influencers who burned out after working intensely for six months. His advice: "Set achievable goals… create five videos a week, and do that consistently over several months." Remember, the tortoise wins every time. Find a pace you can maintain week in and week out, month after month. Shelley Marmor (episode 573) offers this straightforward advice: if your limit is one blog post every two weeks, begin there. “If you burn out, you don’t get to 180. You don’t reach four.”

      4. Steer Clear of the Comparison Trap

Jon Acuff expressed it best: “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” This principle comes from The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan — we often linger in the GAP (comparing ourselves to others or our ambitious goals) rather than existing in the GAIN (acknowledging how far we’ve come). If someone within your niche has significantly more followers than you, consider two perspectives: “They’ve taken all the market share” (Gap mentality) or “Look at the market validation — I know this works!” (Gain mentality). Focus on your own journey, not everyone else’s highlight reel.
