With the new year here, there’s a sense of optimism and possibly a pressure to initiate changes, establish meaningful goals, and pursue significant achievements. However, it's well known that many New Year's resolutions do not succeed, and numerous goals fizzle out shortly after being set. To help you avoid this fate, I've brought in my good friend and expert goal planner Tom Sylvester for today’s discussion.
Tom is a seasoned entrepreneur, real estate investor, author of Lifestyle Builders, and the chief business coach at 2x.co. He aimed to retire by age 35, successfully did so, and now aids six and seven-figure business owners in scaling up without experiencing burnout.

Tailor Your Goal Planning to Suit Your Needs
Tom’s initial suggestion? Don’t confine yourself to someone else’s system. Many struggle with goal planning because they adhere to an inflexible framework that isn’t compatible with their style. Some individuals just need to approximate their direction and start taking action. Others prefer to have everything meticulously laid out to know exactly what lies ahead. The essential part is to be correctly oriented and then go to the level of detail that genuinely facilitates your forward progress.
Evaluate Your Past and Current Situation
Tom employs a GPS analogy. Before you can determine your destination, you must understand your starting point. This necessitates reflection. Consider your past experiences — what was effective? What wasn’t? Where do you currently stand? As Tom states, your results are a direct reflection of who you have been and the actions you've taken. If you desire different outcomes in the future, you must consider who you need to become and what you must modify in your approach.
The Wheel of Life: Personal and Business
Tom employs a framework known as the Wheel of Life. While it may sound sophisticated, it's quite straightforward.
Personal Wheel of Life
Start by identifying the key areas that matter most to you. This could include your marriage, health, finances, or faith. Then, for each category, ask yourself:
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you currently rate this area?
- What must change for it to reach a 10?
This exercise provides a baseline and highlights the gaps between your current state and your aspirations. Tom and his wife conduct this exercise separately over approximately 10 categories and then compare their responses. Depending on how in-depth you want to go, this can take 15 minutes or several hours.
Business Wheel
You can replicate this exercise for your business, analyzing:
- What was your revenue this year?
- How much profit did you retain?
- How are you managing your time?
- How did your major projects perform?
- What are your current biggest challenges?
Establish a baseline for both personal and business planning.
Visualize Yourself One Year Ahead
Once you ascertain your current situation, Tom’s favorite prompt is: envision it’s December 31st of next year. What would make this past year a perfect 10? Let your thoughts flow — perhaps you lost 10 pounds or increased your monthly income by $5,000. Document everything that would signify a successful year.
Then flip that around: what would detract from a successful year? What disappointments might arise? This exercise is akin to what Brian Scudamore of 1-800-GOT-JUNK refers to as his painted picture vision. He envisioned reaching a million dollars in revenue and appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show five years into his business. He then analyzed what needed to happen today to start progressing toward those goals.
Be, Do, Have
This framework integrates all concepts. Begin with what you want to have in the future, then work backward to identify who you need to be and what you need to do to reach that point. Nathan Barry from ConvertKit illustrated this when he recognized that to scale his company from $30 million to $100 million, he had
