As the new year approaches, it brings with it a sense of optimism and perhaps an obligation to make some changes, set meaningful objectives, and strive for significant achievements.
However, it's well-known that many New Year’s resolutions falter, and numerous goals lose momentum after just a few weeks. To ensure you don't fall into this pattern, I've invited my good friend and goal-planning expert, Tom Sylvester, to share his insights.
Tom is a serial entrepreneur, real estate investor, author of the book *Lifestyle Builders*, and the chief business coach at 2x.co. He had a goal to retire by 35, successfully achieved early retirement, and now aids six and seven-figure business owners in scaling their efforts without burnout.

Tailor Your Goal Planning to Suit You
Tom’s initial recommendation? Don’t try to fit into someone else’s system.
Many people struggle with goal planning because they adhere to a strict framework that doesn’t resonate with their personal style. Some need a general direction and then just begin, while others prefer to map every detail to know precisely where they are headed.
The essential point is to find a general direction and then determine the level of detail that will genuinely support your progress.
Assess Your Past Experiences and Current Situation
Tom employs a GPS metaphor. Before outlining your destination, it’s crucial to know where you're starting from.
This is where reflection plays a role: assess your past experiences. What strategies were successful? What did not work? Where do you currently stand?
As Tom states, your results reflect the person you have been and the actions you've taken. Thus, if you desire different results moving forward, you must consider who you need to become and what changes you must make.
The Wheel of Life: Personal and Professional
Tom utilizes a framework known as the Wheel of Life, which is straightforward despite its fancy name.
Personal Wheel of Life
First, identify the key areas that matter to you, such as your relationships, health, finances, and beliefs. Then, ask yourself two questions for each area:
1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate this area today?
2. What needs to happen for it to reach a 10?
This process gives you a baseline and highlights the gaps between your current state and desired state.
Tom and his wife actually conduct this exercise independently across ten categories before discussing their insights together. It can be a quick 15-minute session or a more in-depth exploration, depending on your preferences.
Business Wheel
You can perform a similar exercise for your business, considering:
- How much revenue did you generate this year?
- How much money could you take home?
- How is your time allocated?
- How did your key projects perform?
- What are your current major challenges?
This will provide clarity on your business's current status, establishing a starting point for your personal and business planning.
Visualize Your Future Self
Once you understand your starting point, Tom’s favorite question is: Close your eyes and picture yourself on December 31st of next year. What would make this year a 10 out of 10?
Let your thoughts flow. Perhaps you've lost ten pounds, or increased your monthly income by $5,000. Write down everything that would contribute to a great year.
Then, think about what would detract from this vision. What disappointments would you encounter? Write those down as well.
This exercise mirrors what Brian Scudamore from 1-800-GOT-JUNK refers to as his painted picture vision, where he projected five years into the future, envisioning a million dollars in revenue and an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show. He then worked backward to determine the steps necessary to reach those goals.
Be, Do, Have
This framework connects everything. Begin with what you wish to attain in the future. Then, work backward to identify who you need to be and what actions you need to take in order to achieve that
