Reselling software offers many advantages of a software business without requiring the initial development expense. This allows you to experience recurring revenue, selling a single product to multiple clients, and enjoying high profit margins by white labeling existing software tools. These advantages entice many to launch a Software as a Service (SaaS) business, but you might not need to go through the hassle. There could already be a tool that addresses the same issue. Could you become a software reseller rather than a software creator?

To gain insight into software reselling, also referred to as white labeling, I spoke with Chris Lollini. Chris is a self-proclaimed "recovering engineer" who established a marketing agency as a side hustle nine years ago. This agency evolved into a successful white-label operation called Reputation Igniter, which assists small businesses in gathering more positive reviews for their services. Although Chris has dedicated time to expanding his network and securing a base of monthly clients, he now manages the business in just 5-10 hours a week.

      What is Software Reselling?

Software reselling, or white labeling, involves taking an existing software tool, adding your branding, marketing, and providing customer support. This makes you a matchmaker between a common problem and the appropriate software solution. Think about it similarly to a physical product reseller: you purchase the product at wholesale prices and sell it at retail rates. Chris does just that, but with software.

Why Start a Software Reselling Business?

“It was a progression, for sure. I launched an agency, participated in a BNI (Business Networking International) group, and was attempting to sell various marketing services,” Chris shared. After two and a half years on this journey, Chris had a moment of realization before one of his presentations. He recognized a desire to engage in a more commodity-driven business and brainstormed ideas with his wife. Chris recounted that his wife advised him to sell something easier for both him and his customers to understand. Essentially, she suggested that he narrow his focus and create something simpler to explain and sell. This led to the concept of Ignite.reviews—a reputation management service that aids businesses in gaining more positive customer reviews.

      Finding Software to White Label

Like many side hustles, it's beneficial to begin with the pain point or issue you're addressing for your customers. If you're aware of a common pain point your customers have, Chris stated it is not overly difficult to discover existing software to white label and resolve it. To explore available software tools for white labeling, you can download the free resource above or consult a directory such as ThatCompany. Alternatively, consider a specific audience you'd like to target and search for software in that area.

How to Choose a Software Reselling Niche

Chris experienced an “aha” moment to launch Reputation Igniter after his conversation with his wife. He also recognized it was a viable niche based on the performance of his clients’ businesses. The difference between those seeing satisfactory results and those achieving excellent results was how actively they pursued reviews. Moreover, there were already several effective tools for facilitating review collection. Chris intended to transition into a more scalable business, making the white labeling model an ideal fit.

Finding Your First White Label Customers

Chris noted that he was already providing a reputation management service through his agency, allowing him to retain many clients as he phased out his agency. He also received numerous inquiries during his BNI meetings after clarifying his value proposition. This confirmed that simplifying his service made it more comprehensible for potential customers.
