      Mediaprobe is an application that literally compensates you for watching TV. This isn’t about watching commercials for a few cents; it's about actual programming and sports — the kinds of shows you would watch anyway.

      I decided to register, and they sent me a small sensor. I spent a month testing it to address two main questions:

      What is Mediaprobe?

      Mediaprobe — also known as MPanel in certain regions — is a media research firm that compensates you for watching TV. You hold a small wireless sensor that monitors your physical reactions to the programming. Specifically, it measures your galvanic skin response: minute changes in your skin as you respond to what you’re viewing.

      In turn, companies and TV networks pay Mediaprobe for that information, as it reveals how audiences genuinely feel about their content, beyond just what people indicate in surveys afterward. Notable clients include:

      - CBS

      - Comcast

      - A&E

      - Lionsgate

      - And others

      In exchange for our response data, Mediaprobe shares part of their earnings with viewers like you and me. This concept is similar to what User Interviews does for product feedback, but instead of conversing with a researcher, your skin provides the data.

      Who Can Join Mediaprobe?

      Mediaprobe is available to adults aged 18 and over in the US, UK, and Portugal. Multiple individuals from the same household can sign up. This means you can essentially double your opportunities if you and your partner watch the same shows.

      How Does Mediaprobe Function?

      Step 1: Apply and Get Approved

There’s a genuine cost for the company in shipping the sensors, so they want to ensure that their panelists match the demographics and viewing habits sought by their clients, and that you will actively participate once you receive the hardware.

      In my case, I even had to have a five-minute call with their team to confirm my willingness to test it out. But for the chance to get paid for watching videos? I was ready to navigate a few hurdles.

      Step 2: Wait for Session Invitations

      Once you're approved, session invitations will start appearing in your inbox. Some of the sessions I’ve been invited to include:

      - Fear Factor

      - Top Chef

      - The Winter Olympics

      - Fox and Friends

      - A MrBeast YouTube video

      This leads us to the second drawback: you don’t get to choose the content. You can’t just flip on the TV and expect to get compensated; it must be one of their designated programs at the scheduled time. I’ve received about 5 to 10 invitations monthly, but it took a while to find one I could commit to watching at the assigned time. Each invitation specifies the duration you need to watch and the payout. Typically, it’s $5 for every hour of viewing. The best I’ve encountered was a 1-minute YouTube short that paid $2.50, which equates to $150 per hour if you could consistently stack those opportunities.

      Step 3: Conduct the Session

      You initiate the session in the Mediaprobe app, attach the tiny electrode readers to the tracker, and place the sensor on your hand. They provide straps to help secure it. After that, you wear it for the entirety of the show.

      Here’s the third drawback: to ensure you are actually watching what you say you are, Mediaprobe requires you to enable your phone’s microphone so the app can pick up the audio from the show and sync it with your reaction data.
