The Idea to Start a Mobility Scooter Rental

In 2019, a friend of Lenny’s who operated an equipment rental business contacted him about starting a similar service together. After some research, Lenny compiled a list of equipment they could rent out, including mobility scooters. At the time, the mobility scooter rental market was sparse, and the scooters were not excessively bulky or costly. Hence, they decided to pursue the idea. However, Lenny wanted to gauge the demand for scooter rentals before fully investing, so he created a website using the GoDaddy Website Builder.

      Getting Initial Traction

Within six months of launching the site, Lenny started receiving calls and emails. He credits this early success to the quality of his website. “I observed my competitors and aimed to improve upon their offerings, … and I ranked quite rapidly,” he shared. Although Lenny had limited knowledge of SEO, he sought a domain name that was easy to search. He also filled the site with images and keywords, set up a Google Business Profile page, and created a Yelp listing for his business. The business primarily targeted travelers and tourists in Los Angeles who needed scooters for mobility, but he also received inquiries from film crews. Occasionally, hotels would reach out on behalf of guests needing scooters. Lenny held off on purchasing scooters until he received multiple requests daily, stating, “I wanted to ensure … I would have several consistent rentals regularly.”

      Pricing

Lenny charges $75 per day for renting a mobility scooter. He also applies a $75 delivery/pickup fee—$150 if the customer is more than 10 miles away. He typically does not offer one-day rentals, preferring a three-day minimum at $225 plus delivery/pickup. His usual goal is for four- to seven-day rentals, priced at $249. Monthly rentals are available for $500 plus delivery/pickup. However, he’s open to negotiations, especially if the customer is pleasant or requests a discount. While there is potential for upselling items like cellphone chargers and canopies, Lenny prefers to keep things simple. “Some customers want [add-ons], some don’t, so I focus on simplicity. It's like an 80/20 principle. I just rent out the scooter and maximize my earnings from that.” He charges the highest rates among competitors—thanks to the effort he invested in establishing his brand. Overall, this results in approximately $100 a day in profits.

      Startup Costs

Lenny uses Pride® Mobility Scooters, which generally retail at around $1,500 when new. However, he managed to keep his startup expenses low by purchasing second-hand scooters on Facebook Marketplace and other local platforms for about $500 each. This enabled him to recoup his investment after just one to three rentals. Currently, Lenny owns seven mobility scooters, each serving as a profitable asset. He mentions he could certainly acquire more but prefers to maintain the rental as a side endeavor, rather than a full-time business. When not in use, the scooters are stored in a rented storage unit. For deliveries, Lenny utilizes his SUV, which can accommodate two scooters in the trunk. “I just place the scooter in my car’s trunk and make deliveries that way.”

      What About Liability Insurance?

In addition to the rental agreement, Lenny has a general liability policy to safeguard himself and ensure customers are responsible for the scooters while in their possession. Initially
