A guest on an early episode of the Side Hustle Show remarked, “Why do I feel more excitement about earning $5 passively than I do about earning $5,000 actively?” Regardless of whether this resonates with you, it’s a memorable phrase because that $5 has the potential to grow, unlike the $5,000.
Chelsea Shelton is a former elementary school educator, a mother of three, and a digital product coach at Gold City Ventures— the program co-founded by Cody Berman, who previously discussed how he established a $1,000/month Etsy shop from scratch in Episode 665. During her maternity leave, Chelsea took the Gold City Ventures course, decided to remain home, and dedicated herself to selling digital products on Etsy. Within three months, she achieved 1,000 sales. Currently, her shop generates between $1,000 and $1,200 monthly, mostly on autopilot, while she spends a significant amount of her time coaching other sellers through the same journey.

Chelsea’s Journey
Chelsea began the Gold City Ventures course during her teaching maternity leave. After opting to stay at home, she went fully committed. Her initial product was a basic one-page spring cleaning checklist designed in Canva and listed on Etsy, from which she made her first sale within five days.
Generally, simple printables range from $1.50 to $5—perfect for impulse buys. Editable versions, where customers can input their details before printing, or fillable PDFs can increase the price. For editable products, Chelsea either provides a Canva template link or creates a fillable PDF using Adobe tools, allowing customers to open it in the free Adobe Reader, fill it out, and print it out.
Following the Market Demand
Chelsea’s significant mindset transformation involved moving away from creating products she personally appreciated to instead making products that people were already searching for. Now, her decisions are guided by data rather than her preferences.
Her research process begins directly on Etsy. Entering a keyword into the search bar shows what buyers are genuinely interested in through the autocomplete dropdown—her initial indicator. Chelsea then enriches her research using keyword tools like:
- E-Rank – which reveals historical search data and trends over the past year
- Everbee – a browser extension that provides real-time data from the past week, useful for identifying emerging trends
- InsightFactory – effective for projecting seasonal trends
When assessing a keyword, Chelsea looks for:
- A click return rate (CRT) in the hundreds
- Competition below 20,000 sellers
- A search volume target of around 4,000 to 6,000.
High search and low competition are what Gold City Ventures refers to as a unicorn — and they still exist.
Popular Product Categories
Chelsea has developed over 700 products in her shop. She’s discovered that seasonal items perform particularly well since once these products are created, they tend to sell year after year—frequently at higher rates than the first time they were listed, especially after garnering history and reviews.
Some of her strongest categories include:
- Games (holiday trivia, seasonal pastimes)
- Sports organization printables (think team mom sign-ups, concession stand lists)
- School fundraising kits
- Teacher morale resources such as staff favorite-things surveys for PTAs and Sunshine Committees
One approach that helps her stand out from rivals is bundling. For a school candy cane fundraiser product, she observed that competitors were only offering the individual cards for students to fill out. Chelsea enhanced her offer by including signage (posters that schools could display), transforming it into a comprehensive kit, which allows her to charge a premium and makes the listing more attractive.
Making Your Listings Eye-Catching
Getting your product noticed is one challenge, but persuading potential buyers to click is another. Chelsea prioritizes the main listing image since Etsy operates like a visual search engine—users browse it similarly to social media. The primary image's role is to halt scrolling.
To achieve this, she:
- Zooms in on the product
- Slightly adjusts its angle for
