It's that time of year again — Thanksgiving!
This summer, we attended part of the Rubik’s Cube World Championships in Seattle. The world's fastest solvers can complete a 3×3 cube in under 5 seconds.
But what truly stood out to me? There was a $5,000 prize for first place. It’s another reminder that almost any skill can be monetized if you’re determined enough.
Nothing excites me more than discovering innovative and creative ways to earn extra money and sharing them with you.

1. Luxury Firewood
Leroy Hite has established Cutting Edge Firewood as the world’s first luxury firewood company. We’re talking about firewood boxes priced at $59, firewood racks at $250, and premium cooking wood for high-end grills and pizza ovens.
The business expanded to serve over 30,000 customers, including celebrity clientele, and gained exposure on Netflix and The Today Show.
Leroy realized something straightforward: firewood had never been innovated. It was treated as a commodity — half was infested with bugs, the rest was moldy with mushrooms.
“But I recognized it isn’t just a commodity. It’s an experience,” he asserts. “It’s about the aroma, the crackle, the warmth, and the flicker of the flame. People are willing to pay a premium for that experience.”
His product comprises hand-selected hardwoods — oak, hickory, cherry, apple, pecan, and maple. Each piece undergoes a 48-hour kiln-drying process at 250 degrees, with trained specialists hand-picking every piece, discarding anything wet, rotten, or unattractive. Only top-notch firewood qualifies.
The pivotal moment? In 2017, with his wife eight months pregnant with their third child, Leroy sold their home and invested everything into the business. They moved into a rental, utilized the funds for a warehouse, revamped the brand, and hired staff.
Delivery times reduced from 2 hours to 15 minutes. They offered high-end service to any location customers desired. The business expanded to 25 employees, eight trucks, and nationwide shipping.
Leroy sold his stake about a year ago for an undisclosed amount.
The lesson? Every industry has areas of low standards. Identify where others are merely doing the bare minimum and elevate the standard. Leroy didn’t invent firewood; he simply refused to settle for mediocrity and transformed it into a valuable experience.
2. Boss as a Service
Manasvini Krishna transitioned from a law career to a tech venture and swiftly noticed something missing: accountability.
In her job, she had deadlines and peers counting on her. Working independently? None of that was present.
Unable to find a service that resonated with her needs, she created Boss as a Service. For as little as $25 per month, you can hire a “boss” to help keep you accountable.
Here’s the process: You send them your daily or weekly tasks. These must be measurable as you'll need to validate your completion — with screenshots, photos, or whatever proof necessary. If you don’t complete your tasks, they follow up and persist until it's accomplished.
