Many individuals view a golf glove as just a simple, white, and unremarkable item. However, Randall Pulfer and his co-founder Tyler, who had no experience in manufacturing or design and worked full-time jobs, managed to sell $100k worth of golf gloves as a side venture. ChippGolfCo.com has since emerged as a noteworthy brand in the golfing community. Randall shares how he achieved this—from brainstorming the concept, finding an appropriate manufacturing partner, to making those initial important sales. (Interested in trying a pair? Identifying the “White Space” in the Market
Golf gloves have traditionally been seen as an afterthought. The color options were limited to white. In contrast, the golf industry was thriving, with new brands introducing vibrant shirts, unique hats, and colorful belts, but gloves did not receive similar attention. Randall and Tyler pondered, why not make it exciting? Golfers would appreciate a high-quality glove with a touch of personality.
Why Physical Products?
Randall had always aspired to launch something within an industry he loved, and golf was the ideal choice. While he could have ventured into popular digital products such as content creation, affiliate marketing, golf blogs like Sean Ogle’s Breaking Eighty, dropshipping golf simulators, or even managing a daily deals site, he ultimately desired to create something tangible. Additionally, he liked the thought of seeing a product in the real world—something a stranger might wear on the course one day, crafted from the ground up by him. There were also several inherent advantages to their product:
- Easy storage—gloves are compact, so inventory wouldn’t take over their living spaces
- Lightweight for shipping—no substantial fulfillment costs
- Repeat customers—golf gloves wear out, ensuring built-in repeat business if they could hook people on their designs.
Bringing the Idea to Life
They began their product research with a Google search and discovered that all golf gloves were produced in Indonesia based on their Alibaba findings. They reached out directly to manufacturers, cold-emailing them and testing samples. After identifying a factory that met their quality standards, they placed an initial order of 1,000 gloves per design, requiring a $10,000 upfront investment—a significant commitment for a side hustle. With just two designs, they launched Chipp Golf Co.:
- Left – Feelin’ Lucky
- Right – Texas Hole’em (inspired by the poker games played on the course).
Feelin’ Lucky featured a green clover design, connecting golf to its origins in Scotland and Ireland. Although it wasn’t much, it was sufficient to begin testing the market. Since then, they have expanded to over 10 designs.
Determining the Right Price
Randall and Tyler visited a PGA Superstore to gauge the competition and found most premium golf gloves priced between $18 to $24, leading them to set their initial price at $18. However, they encountered a significant issue: they underestimated marketing expenses. Once they started running ads and incurring customer acquisition costs, they quickly realized that $18 plus shipping would not suffice. Therefore, they adjusted the price to $24 with free shipping, which significantly improved conversions. Later, after considering marketplace fees from platforms like Amazon and Etsy, they settled on a price of $28.
